Vanderbilt’s Stephen Bruehl and Stockholm’s Beatriz Villarroel re-examined 800,000 glass plates shot at Palomar Observatory 1950–1958. AI flagged 198 one-second transients brighter than magnitude 6—visible to the naked eye yet never reported. Timing is uncanny: 71 % appear within 24 hours of a Nevada or Pacific H-bomb detonation. Statistical linkage to nuclear tests is 8.4σ; linkage to Project Blue Book UFO reports is 5.2σ.
Crucially, zero flashes occur inside Earth’s umbra—the cone of darkness trailing our planet. Meteors, satellites, and lightning all ignore that shadow; mirrors in orbit would vanish inside it. The 22σ absence therefore screams “artificial reflector.” Size estimate: 1–10 metre flat panels at 400 km altitude, catching sunlight only when the bombs lit up the sky.
This is the first peer-reviewed evidence of manufactured objects in orbit pre-Sputnik. It flips the Roswell-era narrative: whatever watched Trinity and Ivy Mike was already here, parked in plain sight, waiting for us to go nuclear. Textbooks now need a new chapter—“Chapter 0: The Silent Sentinels.”
