Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a microrobot the size of a grain of sand that can navigate blood vessels and deliver drugs precisely where needed. Using directional magnetic fields generated by a system of electromagnetic coils, surgeons can steer this capsule—even against blood flow. The biocompatible device is built from materials including iron-oxide nanoparticles (for magnetic control), gelatin (for encapsulation), and tantalum (for X-ray visibility). Animal studies in pigs have verified its navigation and drug-release capabilities. According to scientists, this tech could dramatically reduce side effects of systemic therapy, targeting tumors, blockages, or localized vascular issues like aneurysms.
