A recently published study reports on newly excavated burials from Tinshemet Cave (Levant, Middle East), where both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens appear to have practiced formal burial rites. The team found skeletons interred with ocher staining and tools — evidence of symbolic behavior — indicating significant cultural exchange. The authors argue that this find could mean the two populations did not just coexist: they interacted, shared technology and perhaps rituals, challenging older paradigms of strict separation. By re-examining earlier finds with modern dating and imaging, the researchers suggest a more interconnected human past — one in which behavioral and symbolic complexity predates previously assumed timelines.
