Archaeologists working in northern Chad’s Ennedi region have found signs of human habitation during a time when the Sahara was green and habitable. Excavations in sandstone rock shelters revealed pottery fragments, charcoal remains, and rock-painting evidence, suggesting that prehistoric peoples lived, hunted, and possibly herded along now desertified landscapes. Using mobile imaging tools, researchers are mapping cave paintings of hippos, giraffes, and elephants — animals that thrived when the climate supported water and vegetation. The project underscores the dramatic environmental shifts in human prehistory and the adaptability of ancient populations to changing landscapes.
