A team of international scientists has virtually reconstructed the face of a 1.5-million-year-old Homo erectus fossil (DAN5) found in Gona, Ethiopia. The results, published in Nature Communications, reveal a surprisingly archaic appearance with a flat nose bridge and large molars—features usually seen in much earlier species. This discovery suggests that early human ancestors who first migrated out of Africa may have retained more primitive traits than previously thought, highlighting a much more complex and “branching” emergence of our genus.
