A long-standing “chicken and egg” problem in biology has been solved. Scientists previously couldn’t explain which came first: RNA (the blueprint) or Proteins (the machinery). This week, researchers at UCL Chemistry proved that RNA and amino acids can spontaneously join together under conditions found on early Earth. This discovery bridges the gap between simple chemistry and complex life, providing the “smoking gun” for how life began four billion years ago without needing a complex biological precursor.
