New high-precision radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic analysis have been applied to sections of the Carnac megalithic complex in Brittany, France. The new data places the construction of some components firmly in the middle of the 5th millennium BCE. This advanced dating reinforces that the monumental architecture of Carnac was built by Neolithic communities earlier and across a longer span of time than previously thought, suggesting exceptional social organization existed in Western Europe long before classic structures like Stonehenge.
