A global consortium of neuroscientists conducted a landmark experiment to test two dominant theories of consciousness: Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNWT) and Integrated Information Theory (IIT). The study, published in Nature, involved 250 participants and used multiple neuroimaging techniques to compare predictions from both theories. The results challenge both models, showing that neither fully explains the neural correlates of conscious experience. The consortium is now releasing its full dataset and analysis pipelines to the scientific community, encouraging further independent testing and refinement. This collaborative approach marks a new era in consciousness research, aiming to move beyond isolated theoretical debates toward robust, reproducible experiments.
