With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and brain-computer interfaces, a coalition of scientists is calling the search for a scientific definition of consciousness an urgent ethical priority. A new review argues that the lack of understanding of how the brain gives rise to subjective experience is being outpaced by technology that can mimic or potentially house it. The development of objective, evidence-based tests for consciousness is critical for medical ethics (e.g., treating patients in a coma), animal welfare, and for determining the moral status of future highly-advanced AI systems.
