Leading neuroscientists argue that understanding the mechanisms of consciousness is becoming increasingly urgent, especially as artificial intelligence and synthetic biology advance. The authors call for a coordinated global effort to test competing models and prepare for the possibility of artificial or synthetic consciousness. This review highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and new experimental approaches to address one of science’s most profound mysteries.
