Geophysicists have confirmed a startling new discovery: the Earth’s core appears to be “leaking” ancient material into the mantle and eventually the surface. By tracking Helium-3 (a rare isotope trapped since the Earth’s formation), scientists found concentrations in lava flows that shouldn’t be there. This suggests that the “sealed engine” of our planet is far more porous than we thought, potentially forcing a total rethink of how Earth’s magnetic field—our shield against solar radiation—is generated and sustained.
