For decades, the prevailing scientific belief was that Earth’s water was delivered by ice-rich asteroids millions of years after the planet formed. However, a landmark study from the University of Oxford has overturned this. By analyzing rare enstatite chondrite meteorites—the “building blocks” of Earth—researchers found that the original material of the proto-Earth was far richer in hydrogen than previously thought. This suggests that water didn’t arrive via a “fluke” asteroid bombardment; it was a native, natural outcome of the planet’s formation.
