A medical team at the NIH has achieved a world-first by performing a coronary artery bypass without opening the patient’s chest. Using a new technique called “VECTOR,” surgeons navigated a wire through the aorta and created a new route for blood flow from the inside out. This procedure turns a massive, high-risk open-heart surgery into a minimally invasive transcatheter operation, potentially allowing heart patients to return home within 24 hours.
