Scientists at Scripps Research and Gero have successfully used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify novel drug candidates that combat aging by targeting multiple age-related biological pathways simultaneously—a strategy known as polypharmacology. In a study published in Aging Cell in May 2025, over 70% of the AI-identified compounds significantly extended the lifespan of C. elegans worms. The AI was trained on databases of known drug mechanisms and previous longevity studies, focusing on drugs that act on specific receptors (dopamine, serotonin, and histamine) linked to aging. One novel compound, not currently in clinical use, increased the lifespan of C. elegans by 74%, validating the use of AI and polypharmacology for developing next-generation therapies against age-related diseases.
