A global research team has finally confirmed the existence of emergent photons inside a 3D quantum material (Ce2Zr2O7). In this “quantum spin liquid” state, magnetic moments do not settle into an order but remain in a state of constant, entangled motion. This behavior creates “ghostly” particles that act exactly like photons of light but exist only within the solid material. This discovery provides a long-sought-after “clean” model for studying quantum entanglement, which is essential for developing error-proof quantum computers.
