Astronomers have finally solved the mystery of Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs)—the brightest and rarest flashes in the universe. Data released today (Dec 22) confirms that these aren’t just unusual supernovae. Instead, they are powered by a “central engine”: a black hole up to 100 times the mass of our sun shredding a companion star. This discovery provides the first direct evidence of how mid-sized black holes interact with their surroundings, revealing a violent “feeding” process that happens in mere days.
