A breakthrough published on Dec 21, 2025, reveals a method to “refresh” the human immune system. As we age, the thymus (where T-cells mature) shrinks, leaving us vulnerable. MIT researchers used mRNA to reprogram liver cells to secrete the specific growth factors usually produced by the thymus. In clinical models, this turned the liver into a “temporary factory” that restored T-cell numbers and diversity to youthful levels, potentially allowing the elderly to respond to vaccines and infections with the vigor of a twenty-year-old.
