In a massive leap beyond traditional CRISPR, scientists at UCL have successfully used base-editing technology to treat aggressive T-cell leukaemia. Unlike standard gene editing that “cuts” DNA, base-editing chemically changes single “letters” of the genetic code without breaking the DNA strands. This precision reduces the risk of unintended chromosomal damage. In the first major clinical trial, 82% of patients achieved deep remissions, effectively curing a previously “untreatable” form of cancer.
